A partnership between Parenting Resource Associates COMPASS for homeless families program and the Executive Office of the Massachusetts Community Colleges/Welfare to Work Programs, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA), pursuant to the recommendations of the Report of the Special Commission Relative to Ending Homelessness in the Commonwealth (December 2007).
A Day in the Life of the Homeless Families Served by COMPASS
• Imagine being placed in a shelter in the suburbs, far from familiar neighborhoods and familiar people – isolated – with limited access to transportation…
• Imagine living in one room with your children – and sharing a bathroom with another family or other families – in a building with 15 or 30 or more other families – and sharing a common room – and having to agree on what television program so many families should watch…
• Imagine having to spend your time filling out countless housing applications, day in and day out, week in and week out, when the wait for such housing can take a year or longer – and will likely mean moving far away…
• Imagine being a parent and being supervised and scrutinized by shelter staff and other parents…
• Imagine the stress
• Imagine how badly you would feel that your children had to live this way
• Imagine feeling like you had no other choices
